Andy Warhol: Free Love

"A sexual revolution was underway during the 1960's and 70's. Warhol explored erotic themes in his artwork and was inspired by the idea of "free love". Warhol was openly homosecual and an inspiration to those who suffered from trying to conform to cultural norms about love and sex. He believed that there should be a 1st grade course about beauty and love."

I think that the works I chose to post about relate to the themes in these photos. Two of them are a more sexual, and one had two faces, one a flower. While the first photos differs from the second two, I think they fit the theme of self love and not being ashamed of who you are/love.

Natural Landscape Pre-Work

I think the true definition of beauty is something that fills you with joy when you see it or experience it. For example, the utter bliss of watching the rain fall into a puddle or yellowing leaves on the tree's fall to the ground. It's the simple things that really take your breath away.

Whenever I'm outside, I find myself perplexed by the beauty of it all. I go on hikes a lot and since it's spring, the flowers are blooming and the sky has been more blue. I was walking home from my friends house this morning and there were colorful tulips everywhere and little white flowers on a bush.

Alfred Stieglitz & Henri Cartier Bresson

ALFRED STIEGLITZ, “The Hand of Man”, CW 36, 1902, Camera Work photogravure, 6 1/4" x 8 3/8"ALFRED STIEGLITZ, “Spring Showers”, 1900, large format gravure, printed ca. 1903, 12 1/8” x 5”, signed, titled, and dated

Alfred Stieglitz

Alfred Stieglitz was born in New Jersey in 1864 (died in 1946). He went to engineering school in Germany but later returned to New York to pursue photography. His wife, Georgia O'Keeffe, was a famous painter, and he often photographer naked photos of her. Alfred worked hard to make photography an accepted form of art, as it wasn't in 1864. He eventually created a magazine called the Camera Notes, which was an amazing photography magazine.

Henri Cartier Bresson was born in 1908 (died in 2004 (wow he lived awhile)) and was seen as a very influential photography figures. His work started around 1930, and helped to define the creative potential in modern photography. He spent most of World War Two as a prisoner of war, however after that he Robert Capa in the founding of Magnum photo agency. He took a lot of street photography, and also took photos of people when they were unaware that they were being photographed.

The photo on the right is a backlit photo. The only light is coming from the window. The photographer most likely metered on her, because she is visible, however had she metered on the wall, I think she would have become more of a silhouette. In making her a silhouette, it might take away from the "calm saturday afternoon" vibe that I felt. It might make it more of a dark, sad vibe.

Do you think a single photograph has the power to change something?

I do think an image can hold the power to change something. Many times throughout our history we have had photographers publish photos that evoked change. There are so many photographs I have seen that show injustices around the world, historical events, and such that make people want to make a change in their world. A good example of this is a photo from 1956 of a brave woman named Dorothy Counts. Dorothy was one of the first black students to go to school at Harry Harding High School in North Carolina. She suffered a lot of harassment from fellow white students. Her parents later forced her to withdraw from the school due to extreme harassment.

Reflections and Shadows;Margaret Bourke-White

Margaret Bourke-White
Margaret Bourke-White was born in NYC, 1904. She found her love for photography while studying at Cornell University. Later in her career she did a lot of WWII photography. The photo above stood out to me most because the grey tones and the models themselves. Their positioning sort of gives off an uncomfortable feel, with the collars up to their necks and the large bulky belts.
